Leki Super Makalu Ergometric Long SAS Poles (Pair)
Price: $149.95 - BUY

Updated positive angle grip with Soft Antishock System provides cushion and reduces body stress.

Expedition tough, but appropriate for all trekking uses, the Leki Super Makalu Ergometric Long SAS trekking poles are now lighter with a new 10 degree positive angle grip. The Ergometric Long Grip is internally angled to reduce weight with less handle material while allowing for up to seven centimeters of additional adjustment. Placing the wrist in a neutral shock absorbing position helps reduce stress on your hands while climbing and backpacking. The long foam comfort grip handle provides multiple grip positions, and includes adjustable Auto Comfort Straps that quickly release your hands when you need them. Leki uses lightweight heat-treated 7075 aluminum pole shafts with durable Ultra Sonic finish and break resistant Carbide Flextips that bend to an amazing 30 degrees. This durability helps you manage the punishment of a rapid scree slope descent or a tricky talus field traverse. The Makalu also features a Super Lock System (SLS), which secures the pole sections with 40% less turning revolutions and torque to lock. The Leki Super Makalu Ergometric Long SAS trekking poles include the Soft Antishock System (SAS), a combination steel spring and elastomer shock absorbing assembly housed inside the shafts, that helps to reduce stress on ligaments, joints, and muscles. This SAS system also has an easy-to-use, press-and-twist mechanism that simplifies the stability with a visible indicator. The Leki Super Makalu Ergometric SAS hiking poles come with interchangeable trekking baskets that easily screw on and off for installation of snow baskets when conditions dictate. The Leki Super Makalu Ergometric Long SAS pole is a winner of the Backpacker Editors Choice 2004. Leki is also the first pole manufacturer to be tested and approved by TUV, the prestigious Technical Inspection Service of Europe.

Advice from the Crown of Africa experience:
"Conditioning -- The benchmark for checking your physical well-being for this climb is simple: Can you run 5 miles in 45 minutes? If you can do that, you are considered fit enough. If you can't run 5 miles, you better go see David Breashears' IMAX Everest and stay an armchair mountaineer. I didn't run great distances - never more than 20 miles a week. I did workouts on hills to strengthen my up-and-down muscles. I also hiked and, since it was winter in the Northeast, I snowshoed. I did not lift weights since we were 'Gentlemen Climbers' spoiled by a group of porters who were the best atheletes I have ever seen. I do ab crunches so that (I'm embarrassed to say this) my 25-pound day-pack didn't give me any back problems. If you'd like expert advise on how to condition for Mt. Kilimanjaro, check out the exercises shown here and the exercise plan developed by Dr. David Musnick, Sports and Internal Medicine physician and author of Conditioning for Outdoor Fitness. "
